India were chasing Sri Lanka's total of 274 in the 2011 World Cup final at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, had lost early wickets, and needed a settling influence through the middle overs. Captain MS Dhoni promoted himself ahead of the in-form Yuvraj Singh, a decision questioned at the time and vindicated by the result.
He built a matchwinning innings of 91 not out and, with the scores tight in the closing overs, hit Nuwan Kulasekara cleanly over long-on for six, ending the match and the tournament with a single stroke.
It gave India their second World Cup and their first since 1983, won at home in front of a Mumbai crowd that came apart as the ball crossed the rope. The shot is among the most replayed pieces of footage in Indian sport, and the image of Dhoni launching it has become a lasting symbol of the country's cricketing golden era.
