England and New Zealand finished the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's level on 241 runs each after fifty overs a piece, a deadlock that included a freak moment when the ball deflected off Ben Stokes's outstretched bat while diving to complete a run and raced away for four overthrows, runs that would prove critical to the final margin.
Under the tournament's rules, a tied final went to a one-over eliminator, a Super Over, and remarkably that finished level too, 15 runs apiece. With no further tiebreaker overs permitted, the trophy was awarded to England on the basis of having hit more boundaries across the match, a technicality that has since been changed but stood on the day.
Stokes finished unbeaten on 84 from the final's regulation overs and was named player of the match, at the centre of the most dramatic passage of play in the format's history. The 2019 final is widely regarded as the single greatest one-day international ever played, and remains England's only men's World Cup title.
