England and New Zealand finished the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's level on 241 runs each after fifty overs apiece. Somewhere in there the ball had deflected off Ben Stokes's outstretched bat as he dived to complete a run and raced away for four overthrows, an accident worth exactly enough to matter by the end.
Under the tournament's rules a tied final went to a one-over eliminator, and the Super Over finished level as well, 15 runs apiece. With no further tiebreaker permitted, the trophy went to England on the basis of having hit more boundaries across the match, a technicality that has since been changed and that stood on the day.
Stokes finished unbeaten on 84 from the final's regulation overs and was named player of the match, having been at the centre of every part of it. It is still England's only men's World Cup title.
