India came to the 1983 World Cup as rank outsiders, having won a single match across the two previous tournaments. West Indies were chasing a third consecutive title with a side many considered the best one-day team ever assembled. Batting first in the final at Lord's, India were bowled out for a modest 183.
Defending 183 against a batting line-up built around Viv Richards was not a realistic proposition, and then Richards hooked one into the sky on 33 and captain Kapil Dev ran back and held it. West Indies came apart from there, all out for 140, with Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath taking three wickets apiece.
The 43-run win gave India their first World Cup, and it did rather more than that. A generation took the game up because of it, a young Sachin Tendulkar among them, and the money and the television audience that now run the sport began moving towards India from roughly that afternoon.
