The Indiana Pacers trailed the New York Knicks 105-99 with 18.7 seconds left in Game 1 of their 1995 Eastern Conference semifinal at Madison Square Garden, with New York holding the ball and the result looking settled. Reggie Miller, the Pacers' shooting guard, had spent years building a personal feud with the Knicks crowd across postseason meetings.
He hit a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game, stole New York's inbounds pass on the way back, retreated behind the three-point line rather than take the simple two, and tied the game with a second three. Fouled on Indiana's next possession, he made both free throws to put the Pacers ahead.
Indiana won 107-105, a comeback built entirely inside nine seconds by one player, in front of a road crowd that had jeered him all night and then went very quiet.
