The 'Final Five', Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, went into the Rio team final on 9 August 2016 as strong favourites. Raisman was 22, at her second Games and serving as team captain, which was old enough for her teammates to nickname her 'grandma'.
They scored 184.897 and finished a full 8.209 points clear of silver medallists Russia, one of the largest winning margins in the event's modern history, with China taking bronze. It was a second consecutive Olympic team gold for the United States women, after the 'Fierce Five' in London four years earlier.
The nickname was chosen deliberately. Rio was the last Olympics contested under a five-gymnast team format, with the rules moving to four per team from Tokyo 2020 onwards, so a landslide of that shape cannot happen again.
