Serena and Venus Williams met in the final of the 2017 Australian Open, one of several Grand Slam finals the sisters have played against each other, across careers that began together on public courts in Compton, California decades earlier.
Serena won 6-4, 6-4, claiming a 23rd Grand Slam singles title and passing Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22, the most singles majors won by any player, man or woman, in the sport's modern era. It emerged later that she had been in the early stages of pregnancy throughout the tournament.
Two sisters from one family filling both places in a Grand Slam final is a landmark on its own, and they had done it repeatedly. A rivalry that was also a lifelong partnership had spent two decades rearranging women's tennis around itself.
