In more than a century of postseason baseball, no team had come back from a three-games-to-none deficit to win a series. After the first three games of the 2004 ALCS the New York Yankees had the Red Sox exactly there, the last of them a 19-6 humiliation at Fenway Park that appeared to settle the question.
David Ortiz ended Game 4 with a walk-off home run in the twelfth inning and Game 5 with another walk-off hit in the fourteenth, both with Boston facing elimination all evening. Game 6 turned on Curt Schilling pitching on a surgically repaired ankle with blood visibly soaking through his sock. Game 7 was a 10-3 rout at Yankee Stadium.
They are still the only team in MLB history to have overcome a 3-0 postseason deficit. They then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, ending an 86-year championship drought that Boston had spent decades blaming on the Curse of the Bambino.
