Team USA led 10-6 heading into the final day's twelve singles matches at Medinah Country Club, a lead that had been overturned on a Ryder Cup Sunday only once before in the competition's history. On the numbers, Europe were close to gone.
Ian Poulter's five straight birdies to close out Saturday had given Europe something to take into Sunday, and the singles board turned blue behind Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy, who had nearly missed his tee time after mixing up the time zone. Martin Kaymer holed the putt that retained the trophy outright, and Tiger Woods conceded the final match to Francesco Molinari to confirm the win, 14½ points to 13½.
Europe played that week in wristbands carrying the silhouette of Seve Ballesteros, the former captain who had died the previous year, and a good number of the team said afterwards that it was part of what carried them through the Sunday.
