Ended Tyson's title aspirations
Significance
The fight was notorious before either man had thrown a competitive punch. A New York press conference to announce it collapsed into a brawl after Tyson bit Lewis on the leg, the footage dominated coverage for months, and Nevada regulators came close enough to refusing the bout that it was relocated to Memphis.
At The Pyramid in Memphis on 8 June 2002, Lewis, taller and with a significant reach advantage, controlled the distance and picked Tyson apart methodically, giving him nothing to close on and very little to hit. A right hand in the eighth round put Tyson down and finished the fight.
It confirmed Lewis as the dominant heavyweight of the era and closed off any realistic path back to a title for Tyson. The fight is remembered as much for shutting that door as for the eight rounds themselves, and it was the last time Mike Tyson fought for anything that mattered.
