Canada led the 2010 Olympic gold medal game against the United States 2-1 with under a minute of regulation left when Zach Parise scored to tie it, and a Vancouver arena that had already decided the game was won went silent. It sent the biggest hockey match played on Canadian soil in a generation to sudden-death overtime.
Just over seven minutes in, Jarome Iginla won a battle for the puck along the boards and slid it across the crease to Crosby, who beat the American goaltender Ryan Miller with a quick shot into the far side of the net. Teammates buried him while the arena, and most of the country watching at home, went up at once.
Canada took gold in the sport they invented, on home ice, in the final event of the Games, which is not a sequence anyone could have scripted more neatly. It has been the Golden Goal ever since, and it is what Crosby's career gets summarised by.
